Fitness Tip | STRAIGHT BACKS EQUAL STRONG BACKS
Avoid back pain by maintaining a neutral spine whenever possible. A neutral spine is the natural position of the spine and is attained with a slight forward curve in the lumbar (lower) region, a slight backward curve in the thoracic (middle) region and a slight extension in the tiny cervical (neck) vertebra at the top of the spine.
In addition, the ears, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles should align down through the torso into the legs and the feet. With this posture, the body can function in its strongest and most balanced position. Stress to the joints, muscles, vertebrae and tissue is minimized and the risk of injury is greatly reduced.
In contrast, a non-neutral spine (poor posture) tends to develop as a result of a person’s lifestyle, such as working on a computer with a rounded back or sitting with a twisted spine whilst watching television. Therefore we should all aim to maintain a neutral spine when sitting, standing, sleeping and exercising.
