Fitness Tip | START GRADUALLY TO AVOID INJURY
Starting an exercise programme gradually isn't just great for building endurance - it may also save you from potential injuries, sprains or even a heart attack.
Why? Sudden exercise jumps the heart into overdrive, causing it to work harder. If it's not able to handle the pressure, this may result in a heart attack.
In addition, exercising too suddenly can put too much stress on the muscles, causing painful tears or strains.
Instead of jumping into an exercise programme at full speed, do a warm up first. This helps the body to heat up and loosen the muscles, thus preparing it for exercise. Step up the intensity gradually, but if it feels like you're going too fast to keep up, slow down. Thirty minutes of moderate exercise is better than 15 minutes of intense exercise followed by a sudden injury.
