Fitness Tip | SAFE SENIOR EXERCISE
Seniors may not be as flexible, but this doesn't mean they can't exercise. Physical activity at any age is very beneficial, especially for seniors with weakened bones - weight-bearing exercises improve bone density, which can help to prevent painful fractures.
Safe and easy exercises for seniors include:-
Walking: A brisk walk for 30 minutes will give the heart-healthy benefits of aerobic exercise. You can also enjoy a good natter by walking with a friend, family member or in a group.
Dancing: Learning a new dance is not just a great aerobic activity, but it also targets the core and leg muscles. It doesn't have to be intense either - just 30 minutes of moderate exercise will improve your heart health, improve the strength of your bones and muscles, and make you feel more confident about your body.
Elliptical Training: Unlike treadmills where there is always a risk of falling or tripping, elliptical trainers allow for safe and comfortable exercise. Although it isn't as intense as treadmill running, you'll still feel the burn.
Therefore, to see significant improvements in bone and muscle strength, aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise three to five times a week.
