Diet Tip | NOT ALL SALADS ARE EQUAL
Salads are considered the unequivocal symbol of health. Many people assume that choosing a salad is a better option than eating a hamburger. After all, salads only contain leafy greens, tomatoes and other vegetables, which are key ingredients of a healthy diet.
Yet salads can contain more calories and fat than a typical McDonald's hamburger if you're not careful with your condiments.
Common calorie-busting culprits include cheese (even a small sprinkling can add 100 extra calories to your meal), fried or processed meat, cream-based salad dressing and small bits of bacon or croutons.
To cut the calories and fat, stick with salad dressing with an oil or vinegar base, such as balsamic vinegar. Also, use a salad spray if you can - this spreads the dressing evenly onto the salad without racking up additional calories or fat. Salsa and lean, cooked chicken also ups the "delicious" factor without adding unwanted fat.
