Not all carbohydrate should be avoided if your aim is to lose weight. For the last few years carbohydrate has been given a bad press when it comes to weight loss, yet it is essential for our bodies to produce the necessary fuel needed for physical activity. In fact, consuming the right type of carbohydrate is an effective weight management strategy.
The type of carbohydrate to be wary of is any food that has been stripped of its’ bran, fibre and nutrients. These foods have been processed in order to make cooking faster and easier, and are digested so quickly that blood sugar levels become unstable. Over time, these dramatic fluctuations can lead to weight gain, hypoglycemia or even diabetes. White flour, white rice and refined sugar are examples of carbohydrate that should be consumed in small quantities.
Yet good sources of carbohydrate, such as whole grains, beans, fruits and vegetables, are digested much more slowly which maintains constant blood sugar levels. In addition to making you feel fuller quicker and for longer, these good carbohydrates also offer many other health benefits including the reduced risks of heart disease and cancer.
