
Diet Tip | CRAVINGS V HUNGER
Do you know the difference between a mid-afternoon craving and real, physical hunger? Most people don't. To find out, simply ask yourself these three questions:-
- Is my body giving me physical signs I'm hungry, and am I finding it difficult to concentrate? Your body will tell you it's hungry through physical, hard-to-ignore cues, such as a loud, gurgling stomach, whereas cravings won't.
- Do I just want to eat or am I craving something specific? People who are actually hungry just want to eat; cravings cause us to desire a specific food, regardless of how hungry we are.
- If you wait 15 to 20 minutes, do you still want to eat? Cravings come and go within minutes, but real hunger lingers regardless of how long you wait.
If you do experience a craving, waiting a while should help alleviate it. However, if you think you are experiencing real, physical hunger, try eating a small meal filled with complex carbohydrates, some form of protein and plenty of fibre-rich vegetables to keep your stomach full with healthy food and nutrients.
