Diet Tip | ALL FATS ARE BAD - FALSE!
In the 1980's, the trend was for people to go onto low-fat diets because they assumed fat was the cause of excess weight gain. However, we now know that the real cause of putting on weight is the consumption of too many calories combined with low activity levels.
But are all fats bad for us? The answer is no. Although hydrogenated (trans) and saturated fats are bad for us (because they clog up arteries and increase levels of bad cholesterol), monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats have many health benefits.
Why? Well, unlike saturated or trans fats, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats lower bad cholesterol while increasing good cholesterol levels, reducing your risk of cardiovascular disease.
Yet it’s still important to limit how much "good" fat you consume, though - less than 35 percent of your total calorie intake is recommended. You'll find monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats in most types of fish, nuts, seeds, dark leafy greens and some oils.
