With spring just around the corner, it's time to clean out the clutter, put away the winter essentials, and spring clean your house in preparation for warmer weather. But have you considered spring cleaning your fridge? If you want your food to stay fresh, nutrient-rich and free of harmful bacteria, a quick cleaning is a must. Fresh, crisp foods are rich in essential nutrients your body needs to stay healthy, which helps protect you from common illnesses, boosts your immune system, ups your protection against heart disease and type 2 diabetes, and provides the proper nutrients to keep your body pumping through gruelling workouts.
To optimize your health levels, use the following tips:
- Fresh Over Frozen: Start replacing frozen foods with fresh produce from your local farmer's market. Although frozen produce can be healthy, you run the risk of missing out on important nutrients, which break down during the freezing process. You won't run the risk with fresh produce. Stock up on your favourite vegetables and fruits every couple of days to keep your nutrient pile high.
- Move the Veggies: Move all fresh vegetables and fruits into the vegetable crisper. This is a separate compartment, usually located on the lowest shelf, designed specifically to preserve the nutritional and water density of fruits and vegetables, preventing wilting and browning. This reduces the breakdown of their nutritional content.
- Wipe and Eliminate: Wipe shelves down with a sanitising solution. Now that the weather is warmer, harmful toxins, bacteria and other intestinal parasites may begin seeping into your refrigerator, putting you at risk of catching a food-borne illness. To eliminate this risk, wipe down the shelves and walls at least once a week with a sanitising cloth or spray, which kills bacteria on site. Any residue, liquids or stains should be cleaned immediately.
- Check and Chuck: Check the expiration dates of all jars, condiments and refrigerated items. Like frozen foods, refrigerated items can lose their nutritional value over time. If an item is past its expiration date, looks old or emits a strange odour, throw it out and replace it. You don't want to risk accidentally ingesting harmful bacteria or poisons that may cause you to develop a food-borne illness.
Ready to spring clean your refrigerator? Get a pair of cleaning gloves, provide ample room to work, and have a look at it. Remember, it's not where or how you make your food- keeping it clean and well-preserved also goes a long way to improve your health and energy levels.
